App stores, or binary repositories, have been a part of the operating system world for over 2 decades. Just, maybe not a mainstream one. Linux, my favorite OS, has had binary repositories (repos) for ever. Or at least, for over 2 decades. Needed a library? Find it in the repo. Need a game? Repo. Updates? Repo. All your software in a centralized place. From Firefox updates to system updates everything was in the "software center" of your Linux distribution. Sure, you could Google search your program, but why? That seems like a lot of work finding the one you want. Not to mention the risk of getting a virus riddled application. Apple saw the success and genius of a software repository when they rebuilt MacOS with Mac OSX. And it's been an integral part of their OS ever since.
